Dance judge Len Goodman joins Kirsty Young to choose his Desert Island Discs.

Kirsty Young's castaway is the international dance judge, Len Goodman.

He became a star of Strictly Come Dancing and the US show Dancing with the Stars, after a forty year career as a ballroom dancer and judge. Born in London's east end, as a kid he was a barrow-boy, selling fruit and veg on his grandfather's stall. He went on to work on the docks as a welder. But come Saturday night he would don his best threads and head for the Embassy ballroom in Welling.

He was in his sixties when he found international fame and it was, he says, perfect timing. "If it had happened when I was thirty, I'd have been one these people that would be seen rolling out of nightclubs drunk, with a couple of dolly-birds on my arm. The pilot was on my sixtieth birthday and I think it was the perfect age because I was sensible by then, my feet were planted firmly on the ground."

BBC Radio 3
Michael Berkeley's guest is David Bintley, artistic director of the Birmingham Ballet.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011y7rp
Michael Berkeley's guest this week is David Bintley, Artistic Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and one of Britain's finest choreographers. He started out as a dancer, and one of his early leading roles with the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet (now the Birmingham Royal Ballet) was Stravinsky's puppet Petrushka - a role that made huge physical demands, as he tells Michael Berkeley. He made a name as a character dancer - other major roles included Widow Simone in Frederick Ashton's 'La fille mal gardee', Bottom in 'The Dream', an Ugly Sister in Ashton's 'Cinderella', the Red King in Ninette de Valois' 'Checkmate' and the Rake in her 'Rake's Progress'.

David Bintley always wanted to be a choreographer since he made his first ballet aged 16 to Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale, and at 18 he made his debut as a choreographer for the Sadler's Wells company. From 1986 to 1993 he was resident choreographer at Covent Garden, and then left to work freelance for companies around the world. in 1995 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, where his work has ranged from Far from the Madding Crowd (1996) and Cyrano (1997) to popular hits such as The Nutcracker Sweeties, mingling classical ballet wirh jazz; the jazz-inspired reinterpretation of the Orpheus legend in 'The Orpheus Suite'; 'Cinderella', and 'Beauty and the Beast'. His double bill 'Passion and Ecstasy', combining 'Carmina burana', based on Orff's cantata, and 'Allegri diversi', based on Rossini, is currently playing at Birmingham.

His personal music choices range from Mahler's Resurrection Symphony to a dance from Petrushka, the end of Act II of Verdi's 'Otello', an extract from Britten's 'Prince of the Pagodas' and works by James MacMillan, Bob Dylan and Matthew Hindson.

Exile
Sun 19 Jun 2011
22:20
BBC Radio 3
Texts and music on the theme of exile, with readings by Frances Barber and Greg Hicks.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011y7xq
Frances Barber and Greg Hicks read poetry and prose exploring the theme of exile. The texts look at differing reactions to being away from home and its effects, or thinking that home should be somewhere other than it is. Shakespeare, Du Maurier, Italo Calvino, WB Yeats, AE Housman, Browning, Shelley, John Clare, Edward Lear, and Emily Dickinson provide the words; music from Chabrier, Byrd, Bach and Bob Marley, among others.

Produced by David Papp.

Producer's note

Exile and being away from home are the themes for this edition of Words and Music, with Greg Hicks and Frances Barber. Our journey begins with the extraordinary 10th century Anglo-Saxon “The Seafarer” about a man who is most at home away from home on the high seas. The Jumblies voyage is transformative: granted, their heads stay green and their hands blue, but in the end they return home taller.

Psalm 137 describes the Jews’ exile in Babylon and is the text of Byrd’s Latin “Quomodo cantibus”; it’s read in the King James translation and followed by Bob Marley’s Rastafarian “Africa Unite” with its biblical imagery. The storm from Britten’s “Peter Grimes” provides the backdrop for King Lear’s broken-hearted ravings, left homeless by two of his daughters.

WB Yeats imagines a better place to be while he stands on the “pavements grey”, as does Italo Calvino’s Marcovaldo when he’s woken by a nocturnal procession of cows on their way to mountain pastures.

An English sequence begins, including wistful musings from expats: Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca and Robert Browning. Shelley breaks the spell with his bitterly impassioned “England in 1819”, written in his self-imposed Italian exile.

John Cage and Emily Dickinson are followed by Stravinsky’s Hollywood take on the The Star-Spangled Banner, which serves as a suitably patriotic introduction to recent immigrant Hyman Kaplan’s (albeit well-intentioned) mangling of the English language.

Two prisoners provide the final texts: Primo Levi, drained of his humanity in Auschwitz, and John Clare trying to make sense of his past and present in the mental asylum; to end there is hope with the “Agnus Dei” and “Dona nobis pacem” from Bach’s B minor Mass.

Julian Joseph talks to Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts about his passion for jazz.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011y7xs
Julian Joseph interviews The Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts about his passion for jazz in advance of performing some lo-key performances at London's Pizza Express Jazz Club in Dean Street with the ABCand D of Boogie Woogie project. Plus concert music from jazz trio Breach and vocalist Ian Shaw recorded at the launch of this year's Glasgow International Jazz Festival. The music was recorded at BBC Scotland's headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow on Friday 13th May. Breach is the latest project led by organist Paul Harrison featuring Graeme Stephen on guitar and Chris Wallace on drums. Their highly inventive brand of melodic music mixes elements of Eastern folk traditions with the spirit of free jazz and progressive rock creating a melting pot of sounds. Pianist and vocalist Ian Shaw's set is full of humour, panache and vocal gymnastics proving he is still one of the most vital performing artists in the landscape of the UK jazz scene. Shaw's collaborators over the past few years have included Quincy Jones, Abudullah Ibrahim, Guy Barker, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Iain Ballamy, Mornington Lockett, Barb Jungr, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Cedar Walton, Joe Lovano and Claire Martin. This year's Glasgow International Jazz Festival runs from 29th June until the 3rd of July. Also on the show, broadcaster and journalist Kevin Le Gendre pays tribute to the late Gil Scott Heron, profiling music from his 1981 album 'Reflections', in this month's 'Now Is The Time' feature.
