It's Vinyl Night in celebration of Record Store Day 2013.

In celebration of Record Store Day 2013, it's a night of vinyl. Ricky Ross dusts off his own record collection as well as playing a few new Americana and alt country vinyl releases.

Two record players have been brought down from the attic and plugged into the studio, to pay tribute to the format we all grew up with. It's ahead of Record Store Day which celebrates the great work of the independent record shops all over the world.

Everything played tonight is off LP, 45, 78, vinyl and shellac. Prepare yourself for two hours of hi-fi heaven, great stories, a few scratches and the occasional wrong speed.

Michael Berkeley's guest is Bosnian-born writer Aleksandar Hemon.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rygqp
Michael Berkeley's guest is the Bosnian-born writer Aleksandar Hemon, who has lived in the USA for the past two decades, after leaving his native Sarajevo during the Bosnian war in the early 1990s. He has published four acclaimed works of fiction: the novel 'The Lazarus Project', and three collections of short stories, including 'The Question of Bruno' and 'Love and Obstacles'. His latest autobiographical work, 'The Book of My Lives', has just been published. His work has been compared to Vladimir Nabokov and Joseph Conrad.

His eclectic musical tastes range from an aria from Bach's St Matthew Passion and the famous Adagietto from Mahler's Fifth Symphony to traditional Bosnian music, a song by David Bowie, and jazz by Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington.

Texts and music on the subject of time, with readings by Gemma Arterton and Rufus Sewell.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rygqw
Gemma Arterton and Rufus Sewell read extracts on the subject of Time, a theme which has always been popular with authors, poets and composers. From the mourning of the passing of time in poems by Shakespeare, DH Lawrence and John Milton, to the writers who play with the very concept of time. Lewis Carroll's Mad Hatter has bargained with Time for it to always be teatime, while in Kurt Vonnegut's Tralfamadore, moments in the past and future are as permanent as in the present. Martin Amis takes the idea to the extreme by writing the narrative of his novel Time's Arrow backwards! There's also time travel, from Scrooge's nocturnal visit to his past, to HG Wells's Time Machine disappearing into the future. Many composers from the classical, jazz and pop worlds have experimented with unusual or constantly changing time signatures. Guillaume de Machaut and Conlon Nancarrow go further by writing music in which music retraces its steps and goes backwards. The programme also includes music by Haydn, Messiaen, Ligeti and Pink Floyd.

Producer - Ellie Mant.

Producer's note

Tonight’s episode of Words and Music is on the subject of Time, a theme which has always fascinated authors, poets, and composers. For many poets it is the very human preoccupation of the passing of time, leading to death which serves as inspiration; we’ll hear poems by Shakespeare, DH Lawrence, TS Eliot and John Milton on the subject. Then there are the writers who play with the very concept of time. Lewis Carroll’s Mad Hatter has bargained with Time for it to be always teatime, while in Kurt Vonnegut’s Tralfamadore, moments in the past and future are as permanent as in the present, echoing Einstein’s theory that “people like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion”. Martin Amis takes the idea to the extreme by writing the narrative of his novel Time’s Arrow backwards! There is also the hugely popular literary theme of time travel, from Scrooge’s nocturnal visit to his past, to HG Wells’s Time Machine disappearing into the future.

Several of my chosen extracts had an obvious musical parallel: Dava Sobel’s book Longitude about the English clockmaker John Harrison inspired Birtwistle to write his piano piece Harrison’s Clocks, and Bo Holten’s A Time for Everything was inspired by a Bible passage from Ecclesiastes. As Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray suddenly ages and dies when his portrait is stabbed by a knife, Janacek’s Emilia Marty (The Makropulos Case) suffers a similar fate when she stops taking the elixir which has kept her young for 337 years.

Many composers in classical, jazz and pop worlds have experimented with unusual or constantly changing time signatures, and some have gone further by writing music in which the music retraces its steps and goes backwards once it reaches the midpoint. An early example of this is by the 14th century composer Guillaume de Machaut in the motet My End is My Beginning. A similar idea is used by the American experimental composer Conlon Nancarrow in his studies for player piano; in his Study no.21, we hear a canon in which the two lines slow down and speed up from opposite directions, crossing over in the middle like a musical letter X. The programme also includes music by Haydn, Messiaen, Ligeti and Pink Floyd.
