Four Medieval Mystic Masters Across Religions
Sun 28 Apr 2013
18:30
BBC Radio 3
Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist medieval poetry with Derek Jacobi and Sinead Cusack
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01s46x9
Four medieval mystic masters across religions through verses read by Derek Jacobi and Sinead Cusack.
Words and Music travels back to the 12th and 13th centuries through the spiritual poetry of four remarkable mystics; one Christian, one Jewish, one Muslim, and one Buddhist. German Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Iberian-born Hebrew poet Rabbi Judah Halevi, Persian Sufi master Rumi, and Tibetan monk Jetsun Milarepa provide this varied tapestry of reflections reaching to the core of spiritual belief, a tapestry surprisingly fresh and still relevant in today's world. The music featured, taken from the complex soundscapes nurtured over the centuries by these four religions, offers a quite unique spiritual journey, full of contrasting colours and feelings.

Producer's note
One of the many undeniable powers of music is to induce reflection and introspection, enhancing the spirit – what the Renaissance philosopher Marsilio Ficino would call ‘a state of contemplation with divinity’.

When putting together this mix of texts and music my aim was to create one single meditative arch, as it were, in which expressions coming from four different religions and cultures would combine seamlessly becoming one, in the true spirit of humanity.

Finding ancient mystic texts coming from about the same period, in this case the 12th and 13th centuries, became a focus for me as I wanted to explore a sense of perspective through the ages together with the timelessness of the message.

My starting point was the work of Hildegard of Bingen, the German Saint and Abbess, who had the perfect credentials for this endeavour as she wrote both music and verses praising God and exalting the spirit. Next, I thought of Rumi, the celebrated Persian Sufi poet already with a massive following in the West. Then my attention switched to Jehuda Halevi, a poet and philosopher from the rich tradition of Sephardic humanists that emerged in Spain over many centuries. No anthology of this nature would be complete without a Buddhist perspective and when researching for suitable ancient verses I came across the remarkable work of Jetsun Milarepa, one of the most revered monks and thinkers in Tibet.

As for the music, well, the perfect match had to be devotional music, music originally used in the context of religious service and prayer, which accounts for much of the pieces selected here, some of them even field recordings, rather rough but full of energy and passion, with musicians/practitioners caught while at their task. In a way this honours the tradition of ‘contemplation through music’ I so wanted to explore. With this sound tapestry being made over the centuries from such different cultural landscapes like Germany, Persia, Tibet and the Iberian Peninsula, my hope is that they offer enough contrast, within the same spiritual journey, making it a unique experience.

I’m aware that this programme will primarily appeal to those who believe in the spiritual dimension of the human soul. For those who perhaps hold different views I hope it provides an oasis of calm and peace in our today’s busy lives.
