Veteran Corrie actress Betty Driver joins Kirsty Young to choose her Desert Island Discs.

Kirsty Young's castaway is the veteran Coronation Street actress Betty Driver.

For more than forty years she's been pulling pints and dishing up her hot-pot in the Rovers Return. But her career in showbusiness started decades before she took up residence on Britain's most famous street.

She was a child when her mother put her on the stage and she toured the country with an act that showcased her stunning singing voice - it brought success but not happiness. "I did it for over twenty years," she says, "and hated every day of it." Although she has been working now for an incredible 80 years, she says: "I just love work and I will never retire. They'll have to shoot me to get rid of me!"

GSOH: Good Sense of Humour
Sun 23 Jan 2011
22:15
BBC Radio 3
Texts and music on the theme of humour. Readings by Sophie Thompson and Sanjeev Bhaskar.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00xn9y5
This edition of Word & Music draws together a universal theme - what makes you laugh? Or as the personal ads put it: "GSOH", a Good Sense of Humour. Over the ages, poets and writers have drawn inspiration from the things that make us laugh and musicians have tickled our funny bones with their musical notes.

Sophie Thompson and Sanjeev Bhaskar read a selection works from Ogden Nash, Hilaire Belloc, Shakespeare and Wendy Cope and music to accompany these include the laughing aria from Die Fledermaus, some Erik Satie and a smidgen of Sondheim.

Producer: Belinda Naylor.

Producer's Notes

This week’s Words & Music explores the humour in life. And you don’t have to be familiar with text speak or the personal ads to know the title’s acronym, GSOH – Good Sense of Humour.

The programme starts with Sir Malcolm Arnold’s ‘Comedy Overture’, subtitled ‘Beckus the Dandipratt’, written when Arnold was only 21 and inspired by a small, mischievous boy he befriended on a beach in Cornwall. This is followed by Michael Laskey’s ‘The Laugh’, a short but apt description of a laugh bubbling up.

The eternal question of whether women will ever understand men is explored in ‘My Henry Like a Modest Youth’ by Sarah Coleridge (daughter of Samuel Taylor Coleridge) while the pain of unrequited love is heard in Stephen Sondheim’s song ‘Agony’ from ‘Into the Woods’ in which two lovers bemoan their comic fate.

You’ll also hear Morecambe and Wise in their famous sketch with Mr Andre Preview, better known as Andre Previn. Their musical spoof of Greig’s ‘Piano Concerto in A Minor’ is a comedy classic here followed by Andre Previn conducting the ‘real’ version but this time playing all the right notes in the right order.

As ‘GSOH’ comes to an end we hear Tom Lehrer’s take on old age followed by that master of tongue in cheek humour, Ogden Nash and the finale of Haydn’s ‘Symphony in C Major’ into which the composer inserted his own comic joke.

Producer: Belinda Naylor
