Kirsty Young's castaway is the actor Martin Sheen.

In recent years he has won great acclaim and a Golden Globe for playing the leader of the free world in the hugely successful political drama The West Wing. He's made more than a 100 movies, including Apocalypse Now, Badlands and The Departed. For him, work is often a family affair, in Wall Street he acted alongside his son Charlie Sheen and in his latest movie, The Way he was directed by another of his children - Emilio Estevez.

But away from the film set, he's an activist and campaigner - he's been arrested around 70 times and is motivated, he says by faith and conscience above politics.

Frances Fyfield
Sun 3 Apr 2011
12:00
BBC Radio 3
Michael Berkeley's guest is lawyer and crime writer Frances Fyfield.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0100lcd
Michael Berkeley's guest on Private Passions this week is Frances Fyfield, who started her career as a criminal lawyer working for the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service, and went on to became a highly successful writer of crime novels. The most popular of these, featuring Helen West, have twice been adapted for TV, with the heroine played by Juliet Stevenson and Amanda Burton. Frances Fyfield's novels have won several awards, including the Crime Writers' Association Duncan Lawrie Dagger for the 2008 novel 'Blood from Stone'. Her most recent book is 'Cold to the Touch'.

Frances Fyfield also writes short stories, contributes to BBC radio programmes such as Front Row and Night Waves, and presents 'Tales from the Stave' for Radio 4, in which she and a team of experts subject composers' original scores and manuscripts to forensic examination.

The sea is very important to Frances Fyfield, and many of her choices for 'Private Passions' reflect this primary love, including the 'Sunday Morning' Sea Interlude from Britten's 'Peter Grimes', Mendelssohn's 'Hebrides' Overture; John Ireland's song 'Sea Fever', and the hymn 'Eternal Father, strong to save', as well as a reading of John Masefield's famous poem 'Cargoes'. She also loves collecting pictures and visiting art galleries, and has chosen an excerpt from Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' to reflect this. The lighter side of life is represented by Victor Borge's 'A Mozart Opera', and there's also the Habanera from Bizet's opera 'Carmen'.

The 1940s
Sun 3 Apr 2011
22:15
BBC Radio 3
Texts and music inspired by the 1940s, with readings by David Haig and Deborah Findlay.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0100lh2
David Haig and Deborah Findlay read poetry and prose inspired by the 1940s, including work by C Day Lewis, John Betjeman, WH Auden, Dannie Abse, Simone de Beauvoir, Louis Aragon and Freya Stark, with music by Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Django Reinhardt and Peggy Lee.

Producer: Lisa Davis.

Producer's Note

For me, the 1940s is summed up in one image: my grandmother, crouched under her kitchen table with twin baby girls, waiting for the all clear. It’s a picture that is echoed in Stephen Spender’s ‘Air Raid’, where lives in an ordinary household are shattered by an enemy bomb. Luckily for my family, the rural East Midlands escaped the war relatively unscathed. In London, where bombing was part of daily life, Freya Stark describes watching ‘The Doodlebug’ with a certain romanticism. But there is also poignance as 27-year-old 2nd Lieutenant Alun Lewis says ‘Goodbye’ to his wife Gweno, on his way to a posting in India.

In the second half of the decade, there’s a move to forthrightness and optimism; George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’ is finally published two days after VJ Day, having previously been rejected by a number of publishers on the grounds of its politics. Simone de Beauvoir’s ‘The Second Sex’ gives a frank account of the treatment of women. And John Betjeman captures the joy of the British summer holiday as families flock to the seaside – a treat my grandparents later enjoyed in their first Humber.

Through the decade, we hear the music of Darius Milhaud, Kurt Weill and Stravinsky, all of whom had moved to the United States because of the war. American-born composers Bernstein, Barber, Cage and Copland also feature, as do Peggy Lee and Benny Goodman with Gershwin’s ‘How Long Has This Been Going On?’ Back in Europe, conscientious objectors Michael Tippett and Benjamin Britten, and a by-now-elderly Richard Strauss, continued to write, their work suffused with questions of faith and experience. And on a lighter musical note, we hear Django Reinhardt’s ‘Manoir de Mes Rêves’, and Charles Williams’ ‘Dream of Olwen’, from the 1947 film ‘While I Live’ – the theme was so popular, the sheet music remained in the charts for 38 weeks and sold more than a quarter of a million copies.

Irish singer Mary Black delves into her personal collection to find five special songs.

Mary Black enjoys a successful career as a singer of both Irish and contemporary songs.

Sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the business she has recorded numerous albums and has received many international awards.

Recalling the influence singers like Billie Holiday had on her decision to become a singer, Mary also tells Phil Cunningham about her days on the road with the legendary Irish folk group De Dannan.

Picking her 5 tracks Mary also introduces Phil to one of the new young Irish singers she admires and has high hopes for.

Opening with Mary singing Summer Sent You she goes on to pick these five songs:

1: Billie Holiday - God Bless the Child.

2: Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention - Crazy Man Michael.

3: Joni Mitchell - A case of You from the Blue album.
