Kirsty Young's castaway is the musician Roger Waters.

As one of the founding members of the band Pink Floyd, he has seen huge critical and commercial success. But in 1985 he walked away from the group and years of acrimony followed. They were reunited for one final performance, twenty years later, for Live 8. It was a moment many of their fans thought they would not live to see and it was, he says, highly emotional.

"We did a run through on the Friday night and it was remarkable, there were about fifty or sixty people working on the site, putting out rubbish bins or whatever it was they were doing and they all stopped and at the end they all applauded - that was a very moving moment."

Kirsty Young presents gems from the Desert Island Discs archive. In the fourth of our series featuring the castaway choices of actors, we hear from Miriam Margolyes.

Kirsty Young's guest on Desert Island Discs this week is the actress Miriam Margolyes. Her rich career has seen her work with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Baz Luhrmann and she's won awards and acclaim for her film work, her theatre performances and her book readings. She made the leap from the Cambridge Footlights to become one of our most successful and popular character actresses. Yet, despite having one of the most sought after voices in the business, she says she hasn't had the career that she aspired to. She yearned to be taken more seriously and given meatier roles but, she jokes, Joan Plowright always stood in her way. On stage she seems to have the confidence and chutzpah of someone who is beyond embarrassment - but in reality, she says, for most of her life she has simply been a 'frightened little muffin'.

Sun 29 May 2011
12:00
BBC Radio 3
Michael Berkeley's guest is actor and musician Max Beesley.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011j6k5
Michael Berkeley's guest this week is the Manchester-born actor Max Beesley, who made his name in the 1997 TV mini-series 'The History of Tom Jones' and has gone on to star in major TV series including 'Bodies', 'Hotel Babylon', 'Survivors' , 'The Last Enemy', and 'Mad Dogs' (with Philip Glenister, John Simm and Marc Warren). He recently appeared with Ashley Jensen in the ITV drama 'The Reckoning'.

Born into a musical family (his mother was a jazz singer and his father a professional jazz drummer), Max was a pupil at Chetham's School of Music, studied percussion at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and pursued a career as a musician before turning to acting. He has toured as percussionist/keyboard/backing vocals with George Michael, Robbie Williams, Take That and Chaka Khan among others.

Max Beesley is passionate about music, and his eclectic choices include keyboard pieces by Bach and Liszt, a Chopin prelude arranged for cello and piano by Aaron Copland, Elly Ameling singing Schubert's 'Ave Maria', part of the 'Dies irae' from Mozart's Requiem, 'The Shrove-Tide Fair' from Stravinsky's ballet 'Petrushka', music from his own soundtrack to the film 'The Emperor's Wife', and Pat Metheny's 'Third Wind' from the album 'Still Life Talking'.

Let's Face the Music and Dance
Sun 29 May 2011
22:15
BBC Radio 3
Words and music on the theme of dance read by Imogen Stubbs and Joseph Kloska.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011j6kh
Words and music on the theme of dance including poetry and prose by Shelley Patrick Kavanagh, William Carlos Williams, T.S. Eliot and Jane Austen with music by Schubert, John Tavener, Poulenc, Fred Astaire and Shostakovich.

Producer: Fiona McLean.

Producer's Note

'Every day I count wasted in which there has been no dancing' said the philosopher Nietzsche. In this week’s edition of Words and Music dancing in its many forms is portrayed from the sweaty physicality of the male dancer in Adrian Mitchell's 'For David Mercer' to the lone figure in Rainer Maria Rilke's 'Spanish Dancer' and the wedding dance in T.S. Eliot's 'Four Quartets'. Jane Austen’s Emma's description of Mr Knightley's skill as a dancer marks a point in the novel when the reader begins to understand Emma's growing attraction long before she realises it herself. More than one literary critic has called it the nearest thing to a sex scene that Austen ever wrote.

Musically, you'll hear John Tavener's setting of the Yeats poem, 'To a Child Dancing in the Wind' alongside Laurence Binyon's 'The Little Dancers' and Don Paterson's 'Dancer' from his version of Rilke's 'Orpheus'. Gershwin's 'Three Preludes' are evoked in Alfred Corn's poem 'Choreography', a poetic recreation of Mikhail Baryshnikov's performance of the piece for Mark Morris. Martha Graham, the American dancer and choreographer had a profound influence on contemporary dance. James Laughlin's poem about her captures her distinctive style and is heard with Aaron Copland's 'Appalachian Spring', commissioned by Graham in 1944 and which premiered in Washington with Graham dancing the lead role. Words and Music ends with T.S. Eliot's 'Four Quartets', a passage featuring a matrimonial dance, part of Eliot's depiction of the cycle of life – in the final words of the section his dancers return to the earth.

Virtuosic jazz featuring dynamic vibes virtuoso Joe Locke, Grammy nominated pianist Geoff Keezer and British saxophonist, Tim Garland who has played with the likes of Chick Corea and Joe Lovano and has now been hailed as one of the greatest saxophonists in the world. Expect trio interplay and improvisations of the very highest order.

Celebrating the release of their third album "VIA" this spring, New York vibes virtuoso Joe Locke, Grammy nominee Geoffrey Keezer and British saxophone legend Tim Garland, create a unique three way dialogue of captivating, immersive music.

Notably as featured member of Chick Corea's band Origin and Grammy winning arranger, saxophonist Tim Garland is a considerable musical force on the world stage. In 2001, in pursuit of aural beauty and truth he enlisted musical soul-mates, leading vibraphonist Joe Locke - a favourite of the club with his own solo projects - and pianist Geoffrey Keezer who first visited Ronnie's as part of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, to form the 'Storms/Nocturnes Trio'.
