The choices of the cookery writer and TV chef Nigella Lawson.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b014r11m
Desert Island Discs Revisited with Kirsty Young explores the choices of the cookery writer and TV chef in the first of a series featuring chefs and cooks.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/b690f390#p009379c
This week Sue Lawley's castaway is the broadcaster, cook, mother and domestic goddess Nigella Lawson. She came from a privileged background - her father, the former Conservative chancellor Nigel Lawson, her mother the society beauty and heir to the Lyons Corner House empire Vanessa Salmon. After graduating from Oxford, she wrote a restaurant column for the Spectator. She became deputy literary editor of the Sunday Times in 1986 and it was on that paper that she met John Diamond - the couple married three years later. She credits him with uncovering her potential - suggesting she wear more flattering clothes and make-up, encouraging her food writing and investing faith and pride in her.

He came up with the title of her first book How to Eat. It was a huge success and was followed by a second, award-winning book How to be a Domestic Goddess, which held out hope to would-be goddesses that even the most meagre skills could produce stunning results. But her life has been tainted by cancer. Her mother died of liver cancer in her 40s and her sister Thomasina was in her 30s when she died of breast cancer. When her husband had hospital tests for a cyst on his neck it was Nigella who chased up the doctors to find out the results and interrupted EastEnders to tell him that he too had been diagnosed with the disease. John Diamond died in 2001, leaving Nigella to bring up their two children, Cosima and Bruno. She has written a further two books and her series Nigella Bites has been bought up by American television. She says "I suppose I do think that awful things can happen at any moment, so while they are not happening you may as well be pleased."

Aminatta Forna
Sun 18 Sep 2011
12:00
BBC Radio 3
Michael Berkeley's guest is Glasgow-born author Aminatta Forna.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b014m927
Michael Berkeley's guest this week is the Glasgow-born author Aminatta Forna, whose first book, 'The Devil that Danced on the Water' - a memoir of Sierra Leone where her dissident father was eventually arrested and executed by the regime - was runner-up for the 2003 Samuel Johnson Prize. Her next book, the novel 'Ancestor Stones', described by the Washington Post as 'a richly patterned mosaic of African culture and history', won several international awards; while her latest novel, 'The Memory of Love', set during the Sierra Leonean civil war of the 1990s, has been shortlisted for the 2011 Orange Prize for Fiction and won the 2011 Commonwealth Writers Prize (Africa). She is a trustee of the Royal Literary Fund, has published essays and articles, and writes for radio and TV.

Several of her choices recall her childhood experiences of music: she tried to learn piano and has always loved Bach's keyboard music, which she listens to while writing. She went to school in Malvern, where she first encountered Elgar's Cello Concerto, which helped her write the love scene in 'The Memory of Love'; while an extract from Prokofiev's ballet 'Romeo and Juliet' recalls her early love of opera and ballet. Tchaikovsky's first Piano Concerto was also an early passion from her schooldays, while she became interested in the improvisatory nature of jazz during a year spent in the USA. While writing her first book she used to go to Westminster Abbey, particularly to hear church music, and Rodrigo Leao's 'Ave Mundi' marries her enthusiasm for sacred music and dance. Finally her African heritage is celebrated in the music of Ali Farka Toure.

Texts and music on the theme of cats. Readings by Juliet Stevenson and Kenneth Cranham.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b014m92h
From the mew of the pussycat to the roar of the lion, Nine Lives pays homage to the musicality and poetry of the feline form. Juliet Stevenson and Kenneth Cranham read poetry and prose from Rudyard Kipling, T.S. Eliot, Lewis Carroll, Ruth Padel and Grace Nichols accompanied by music from Saint-Saens, Rossini, Telemann, John Tavener, Ravel and Tchaikovsky.

Producer: Baya Cat

Producer's Note
Love them or loathe them the cat is an animal which evokes strong feelings and a wealth of artistic responses.

The cat loving poet Peter Porter’s funny ‘Mort aux Chats’, places itself in the anti-cat camp. 'Cats watch too much television, they can sleep through storms, they stabbed us in the back last time…. Death to all cats! The Rule of Dogs shall last a thousand years!' Telemann’s ‘Cantata’ offers another diatribe but with reason. Lamenting the death of his beloved canary, Telemann vents his rage on the cat that took its life. No doubt he would approve of another work in tonight’s programme, Anne LeBaron’s ‘Dog-Gone Cat Act’, so-called because the harp strings upon which the piece is played are made from catgut.

But whilst some denounce the cat as greedy, lazy, selfish creatures, there will always be those who praise them. In celebration of the majesty of big cats, we come face-to-face with the lion – king of the jungle – in Saint-Saens’s Carnival of the Animals, meet The Tyger in John Tavener’s musical representation of the William Blake poem and explore the exulted position of the jaguar in Mayan mythology in Ruth Padel’s ‘Saviour’. The place of cats in religion is also touched upon by Peter Porter and Grace Nichols, both of whom mention the cats of Ancient Egypt. Benjamin Britten sets to music Christopher Smart’s ‘Jubilate Agno’, a work dedicated to the glory of God.

On a lighter note there’s the enigmatic Cheshire Cat in Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’; Puss in Boots and the White Cat from Tchaikovsky’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’; and what feline-themed programme would be complete without T.S. Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’? You’ll hear the coolest of cats, Macavity, who would surely appreciate a burst of jazz, here Charlie Singleton’s ‘Cat’s Paw’. Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’ runs throughout the programme: the grandfather reciting passages in Tea Obreht’s novel ‘The Tiger’s Wife’; the Overture from the Disney adaptation; the sumptuous description of Bagheera the Black Panther; and Percy Grainger’s setting of Kipling’s poetry to music.
