Riccardo Chaillly leads the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in Beethoven: Symphony No 7 in A.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0167v0g
Presented by Louise Fryer

Live from the Barbican Hall

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is conducted by its Music Director Riccardo Chailly in two of Beethoven's Symphonies, the 1st and the 7th. They begin their concert with a recent work which uses Beethoven's 1st as its jumping-off point - 'Bann. Bewegung mit Beethovens Erster' by Steffen Schleiermacher.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra has been playing Beethoven's symphonies since the time that the ink was wet on the manuscript - the orchestra, the oldest in the world, can trace its history back to the middle of the 18th-century. Now they bring their recent Beethoven project to London's Barbican - performances of his symphonies preceded by recent works which take the music of Beethoven as their inspiration. Steffen Schleiermacher, now in his early 50's, was born in a town not too far from Leipzig (Halle, Handel's birthplace) and is a noted pianist and conductor as well as a composer who intriguingly combines the traditional and the modern.

Julian Joseph presents a concert given at Kings Place by Gwilym Simcock and his trio.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b016kdcl
Gwilym Simcock is a busy man currently enjoying his recent Mercury Music Prize nomination for his latest recording "Good Days at Schloss Elmau" on the ACT label. The nomination honours a performer at the height of his musical powers. He has truly evolved and transcended his position as Radio 3's first New Generation Jazz Artist and "The Elmau" recording showcases his solo piano virtuosity and follows on from his solo, duo & trio recording "Blues Vignette", the album where he first revealed his latest working trio. Like many of the most accomplished jazzmen Gwilym thrives on collaboration and recently sparkled in duet with star vocalist Cleveland Watkiss as part of his piano/vocal series at the Pheasantry in Chelsea. The Anglo - American quartet "The Impossible Gentlemen" features the pianist on a recording of the same name with Mike Walker, Adam Nussbaum and Steve Swallow and showcases an exciting band currently wowing audiences at all the international jazz festivals. But it is his regular working trio that Jazz Line-Up feature with Russian bassist Yuri Goloubev and British drummer James Maddren. This trio is at the heart of Gwilym's musical vision and today he invites his long-time collaborator and special guest from "Acoustic Triangle" Tim Garland on saxophone. Julian Joseph presents.

Kirsty Young's castaway is the crossbench peer and social entrepreneur Lord Victor Adebowale.

For the past decade, when not in the House of Lords, he has devoted his time to overseeing services for people who are homeless, suffer from drug or alcohol addiction and have mental health issues or learning disabilities. To many, they are the most disadvantaged people in society, but he says that's not a term he finds useful: "I find it very difficult when people use words like 'bottom of the pile' and 'disadvantaged' - you'd be amazed that the veneer that separates people who don't think they're at the bottom of the pile from people who are is quite thin."

Desert Island Discs Revisited with Kirsty Young explores the choices of the author of The Ice House in the third of a series featuring crime writers.

After Minette Walters' father died of injuries sustained in World War II she won a scholarship to Godolphin School, and eventually became Head Girl. From a young age she shunned girls' story books, preferring the more gripping Biggles and later, Agatha Christie. Her ambition was to be a writer. She says, "I just adored the whole thing of escapism into somebody else's world. When you're a writer and you are creating a world - you can only relate to one reader at a time, so it's: how do you persuade people? how can you draw the reader into that world so you can share it together? It's very exciting and any good writer, that is exactly what they do - they are tempting you into a world of their creation."

Minette Walters went to Durham University to read modern languages. When she left she took on barmaid and secretarial work that would allow her to continue her writing but all her many manuscripts, in particular plays to BBC Radio, were rejected. Her efforts in magazine publishing were more successful and, after a stint as an editor, she soon found herself writing 30,000 word hospital romances. She was inspired to attempt a novel and after having two children she turned her attention to crime fiction, a subject that had held her interest since childhood. But she says of The Dark Room: "there is virtually no comparison with Agatha Christie - it's much deeper and darker and more naturalistic, realistic, gritty. That's why I put 'fart' in the first paragraph, because I thought, whoever reads the first page of this book is not going to think they are reading an Agatha Christie!"

She has written eight books in ten years and received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for the best crime novel published in America for The Sculptress and won the Gold Dagger Award for best British Crime novel in 1994 for The Scold's Bridle. Her books have been translated into 36 languages and five of her books have been made into television films. Minette says she never knows who has done the crime until she finishes the book: "I set up a limited number - if I knew which one was guilty I would either underwrite them or overwrite them and if I don't know then I still explore them in depth. This joy, of going inside their heads, I'd be bored stiff if I knew what was going to happen."

Michael Berkeley's guest is Equality and Human Rights Commission chair Trevor Phillips.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b016kd87
Michael Berkeley's guest today is Trevor Phillips, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Born in London, Trevor went to school in Guyana, where his family comes from, and studied chemistry at Imperial College, London. In 1978 he was elected president of the National Union of Students. He was elected a member of the Greater London Authority in 2000, quickly becoming chair of its Assembly. In March 2003 he became Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality, and subsequently of the new Equality and Human Rights Commission, which in addition to its responsibilities in the areas of disability, gender and race, also examines age, religion, belief, sexual orientation and the promotion of human rights.

He has been the executive producer of several major TV documentaries, including the award-winning 'Windrush'. He is a vice-president of the Royal Television Society, and was awarded an OBE in 1999 for services to broadcasting.

His music choices begin with a movement of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto, played by Wynton Marsalis, whom he describes as 'arguably the greatest instrumentalist of his generation on any instrument'. He continues with Janet Baker - his favourite female singer - in an aria from Handel's 'Julius Caesar', followed by a traditional English song sung by the Unthanks. Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis comes next, followed by a piece that reminds Trevor Phillips of the six years he spent playing in a Salvation Army band. A Guyanese folk song is followed by Arvo Part's 'Fratres', which he loves for its spare, contemplative quality. Finally there's Tom Lehrer's 'The Elements', which partly explains why he decided not to follow a career in chemistry.

BBC Radio 3
Texts and music on theme of Empire, with readings by Sian Thomas and Timothy West.

The quest to Empire-build - from the sixteenth century Spanish conquistadors to the nineteenth century British Raj - has inspired some powerful and enduring words and music. Readers Sian Thomas and Timothy West read poetry and prose which conjures both the era of empire, Rudyard Kiplings' 'The White Man's Burden' and Forster's 'A Passage to India', and the discomfort and melancholy of the post Imperial world, with Derek Walcott's 'Poems on the Passing of an Empire' and Langston Hughes' 'Roar China'. War poetry offers a disturbing glimpse into the darkest impulses of Empire-building with Hardy's plaintive Drummer Hodge and Wilfred Owen's coruscating 'Dulce et Decorum Est' before the heart-rending opening notes of the 'Sanctus' from Benjamin Britten's 'War Requiem'. Empire-building and enslavement are tragically bound together; in the negro spiritual 'Nobody Knows de Trouble I've Seen' - sung by Barbara Hendricks - and James Weldon Johnson's poem 'Lift Every Voice And Sing' we hear both the sorrowful reality - and joyful rejection - of slavery.

Producer's Note
The rise and fall of Empires and the men and women behind them have given rise to some of the most tragic and triumphant moments in history. From the 16th century Spanish Conquistadors to Queen Victoria’s reign as Empress of India – the elusive and absorbing drive to empire build has inspired poets, musicians and authors for centuries. The programme opens with Benjamin Britten’s fanfare to perhaps the most glamorous empire builder of all time: Queen Elizabeth I. The war-like Virgin Queen was not shy in her Imperial ambitions: we hear her rabble-rousing speech to the troops at Tilbury, on the eve of The Spanish Armada.

Edward Elgar and Rudyard Kipling are both figures with strong Imperial associations. Much of their work is now synonymous with long out-moded ideas of national entitlement. Elgar’s Imperial Masque, The Crown of India and Kipling’s White Man’s Burden are uncomfortable reminders of a Victorian world order which has since crumbled – but not without leaving a painful mark across the globe.

The most invidious aspect of man’s urge to empire build is the deprivations suffered by the oppressed nation; the lives crushed in the militaristic advance of the conquering culture. Derek Walcott’s Two Poems on the Passing of an Empire and the negro spiritual Nobody Knows, recall the heart breaking history of slavery which underpins that of any nation which has pursued the spread of empire. And yet the programme closes with James Weldon Johnson’s soul-stirring Lift Every Voice and Sing alongside Sam Cooke’s cry for freedom A Change Is Gonna Come – both happy reminders that hope has come to replace the darkness of the past.
