Michael Berkeley's guest is actor, playwright and director Steven Berkoff.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ghjcj
Michael Berkeley welcomes the actor, playwright and director Steven Berkoff, renowned for the visceral quality of his plays such as East, West, Decadence, Greek, Sink the Belgrano, Scumbags, Ritual in Blood and Messiah. He has also adapted and directed for the stage Kafka's Metamorphosis and The Trial, the Greek tragedy Agamemnon, and Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. His plays, adaptations and his one-man show have toured widely abroad, from the Far East to the USA.

As an actor, Steven has appeared in films ranging from A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, Octopussy and Beverly Hills Cop to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. On TV he has been seen in The Professionals, Star Trek and Jonathan Creek, among others. He has published a variety of books on the theatre, and an autobiography, Free Association.

His eclectic musical choices range from music for the stage - Milhaud's ballet 'La Creation du monde' Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, Britten's opera 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', and incidental music to Brecht's 'Mother Courage' - to music that reflects his love of travel - Buddhist chant and an unusual Monkey Dance from Bali. There's also Ivo Pogorelich pl;aying the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.32 in C minor, Op.111, and Chet Baker with the Rogers and Hart classic 'My Funny Valentine'.

Perfection
Sun 22 Apr 2012
18:30
BBC Radio 3
A sequence of poetry, prose and music on the theme of perfection.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ghb91
Physical beauty is the ultimate expression of human perfection. In geometry, the circle is, according to Aristotle, 'the perfect, first, most beautiful form'. This week's Words and Music goes in pursuit of perfection - an often elusive intangible concept for many writers and musicians. It can be an unattainable state, ending only in disappointment and failure. But there is still hope, for comfort can be found in the simplicity and stability of its sibling, imperfection.

PRODUCER'S NOTE
Beginning with Billy the Kid, this week's Words and Music on the theme of Perfection opens with a riff on the perfect fifth, used by Copland to evoke the wide open prairie of the American West as the pioneers trekked towards their future.

The idea of mathematics as an expression of perfection unfolds during the programme through pieces such as Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta - based on the Fibonacci sequence - and Purcell's Golden Sonata. They represent a metaphysical notion of perfection and of unity.

Ted Hughes’s translation of Ovid’s verse poem Venus and Adonis (and Atalanta) narrates the birth of Adonis, the god of beauty. Often considered the ultimate expression of human perfection, physical beauty can inspire complex and multitudinous feelings of desire, love, fear - or for Venus, the goddess of love herself, when she sees Adonis, awe.

With advances in medicine and bio-technology, physical perfection has become something that we can construct ourselves. Taking power from the gods, we become creator. I’ve used the score from the 1997 film Gattaca - which offers a meditation on the idea of genetic perfection - to hint at this.

As the pioneers traversed the scorched earth of the West, their hopes were for a new beginning, for the discovery of new lands to settle. Their chapter is just one in humankind’s long history of search for the promised land - for Utopia. Szymborska's poem of that name explores how this imagined place may be: an island, in the Polish Nobel Laureate’s poem, where ‘all becomes clear’, and where ‘Meaning lies’. Cunningly, Szymborska explains that ‘For all its charms, the island is uninhabited’ - perhaps suggesting that our search for utopia can only ever fail. Goethe’s hero in The Sorrows of Young Werther has a similar epiphany, which Brahms beautifully articulates in his C-Minor Piano Quartet.

Menna Elfyn, the passionate Welsh language poet, offers us some consolation for the disappointment when our quest fails and perfection eludes us: ‘imperfection / is simple, stable’.

Producer: Gavin Heard
