Mary Ann Kennedy with tracks from across the globe, plus a studio session with Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart.

Karine formed her first band at the age of 10, known as KP and the Minichips. She completed a degree in politics and philosophy, and this has always been reflected in her songwriting: her new album 'Traces' includes songs about the Occupy movement outside St Paul's Catherdral, as well as Donald Trump's controversial golf club development in Aberdeenshire. It also features a warm tribute to a late neighbour, and a song about the mixed emotions on leaving a family home.

Them and Us
Sun 4 Nov 2012
18:30
BBC Radio 3
From 2012's Free Thinking Festival, a special live recording on the theme of 'them and us'
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nphb3
In this special edition of Words and Music recorded at The Free Thinking Festival in St Mary's Heritage Centre, opposite The Sage, Gateshead, Sian Thomas and Ron Cook read poetry and prose on the theme of this year's festival: Them and Us. Music is provided by The Aronowitz Ensemble, soprano Sarah-Jane Lewis and The NASUWT Riverside Band, with conductor Ray Farr.

The programme opens with an extract from Arthur C. Clarke's' sci-fi classic Childhood's End. We hear poetry by Fleur Adcock, Hilaire Belloc and Wilfred Owen and prose from Jane Austen and George Orwell. Our musical accompaniment includes Mars from Holst's The Planets, Thomas Ades' Darknesse Visible and Poulenc's Voyage a Paris.

Producer: Georgia Mann-Smith.

Producer's Note

Them and Us. A phrase which takes us in so many different directions; from the fear of an unknown ‘Them’, to the melancholy figure of the eternal outsider, through to that most British of concerns: social class. In today’s special edition of Words and Music here at BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking festival, we’ll explore how that loaded term is at the heart of work by some of our greatest poets and authors, from William Shakespeare to George Orwell, Jane Austen to Fleur Adcock.

We start with the ultimate ‘Them and Us’ scenario – a fearful look to the skies as alien life arrives on earth in Arthur C. Clarke’s sci-fi classic Childhood’s End. Holst’s menacing ‘Mars’ from The Planets offers a similarly dramatic and sinister vision of what the alien ‘Them’ might mean for ‘Us’. Shakespeare’s much quoted ‘scepter’d isle’ speech from Richard II reminds us how national identity is often defined by a sense of deliberate separation from the outside world, with England regarding itself as a ‘… precious stone set in the silver sea / Which serves it in the office of a wall’. Within the ‘scepter’d isle’ itself another form of identity takes its cue from geography: the great north south divide. In Tyne Dock and The South Country we catch a glimpse of two very different ends of England, the traditional The Water of Tyne and Grainger’s Sussex Mummers’ Christmas Carol underscore the idea of regional difference, which informs so much of what it means to be British.

‘Them and Us’ is a phrase bound up with class connotations. Throughout the programme we’ll hear a satirical take on the complicated world of snobbery and social class, courtesy of Nancy Mitford’s Noblesse Oblige; while George Orwell gives a typically wry account of the two very different worlds which exist in the kitchen and the dining room of a salubrious Paris restaurant.

There is of course a darker side to ‘Them and Us’, and nowhere is that more keenly felt than against the divisive and violent backdrop of war. Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A minor, written in the aftermath of the First World War, revealed a newly contemplative, fraught compositional tone – a stark contrast to the pomp and ebullience of his pre-war music. We hear an extract from it after Wilfred Owen’s heart-rending Strange Meeting, in which an enemy soldier exclaims: ‘I am the enemy you killed, my friend’ – capturing the painful futility of two men compelled to view each other through the dangerous prism of ‘Them and Us’.

We end the programme with an exploration of how we view another ‘Them’ with whom we share the planet: animals. In his Essays, Montaigne questions man’s arrogance, asking how we can ‘know the secret internal stirrings of the animals?’ He concludes that man and animal are both in possession of a soul, the division we see between our world and theirs, illusory. It’s a thought Philip Larkin may have had sympathy with. In The Mower, the poet contemplates with sadness the death of an animal at his hands, but reflects that in the end we all:

should be careful
Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

Georgia Mann-Smith (producer)
