Kirsty Young's castaway is the broadcaster and writer Danny Baker.

He is a Sony Gold award winning broadcaster with one of the most recognisable voices on our airwaves and his numerous radio and TV shows have brought him legions of fans. As a writer, he has put words in the mouths of Jeremy Clarkson, Ricky Gervais, Chris Evans and even the legendary George Burns.

Despite the successes, he says he's never plotted his next career move: "No plan - certainly no plan - you've only got to look at the incredible way this is all botched together and yet I don't feel that's somehow lucky when you look around at some of the half-wits and boss-eyed bozos who people this business - and they're running departments. All of this is an ant-hill that somebody's kicked over, and I happen to be one of the more bumptious ants."

Patrick Leigh Fermor
Sun 31 Jul 2011
12:00
BBC Radio 3
An edition from 2005 featuring the choices of the late travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007g49p
Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor, travel writer and war hero, died in June at the age of 96. In 2005 he recorded an edition of Private Passions, in which he talked about the music he loved. This is another chance to hear that conversation with Michael Berkeley.

Patrick Leigh Fermor was born in London in 1915, the son of a distinguished geologist. He was brought up in England after his parents left for India, and attended The Kings School, Canterbury, from which he was expelled for holding hands with a local greengrocer's daughter. At the age of 18 he set off to walk across Europe to Constantinople (now Istanbul), a journey which later inspired his two finest travel books, 'A Time of Gifts' (1977) and 'Between the Woods and the Water' (1986). After further travels in the Balkans, he fought in Crete and mainland Greece during World War II. His exploits with the Greek Resistance in Crete inspired his fellow-officer Captain Bill Stanley Moss's book 'Ill Met by Moonlight', later adapted as a film, with Dirk Bogarde playing Leigh Fermor. He published his first travel book in 1950, and became widely regarded as Britain's greatest living travel writer. He divided his time between his beloved Greece and Worcestershire, and was knighted in 2004.

Patrick Leigh Fermor loved music of all kinds, from Greek folksongs to Irving Berlin. His eclectic selection for Private Passions includes an extract from Mozart's Don Giovanni and the finale of the Sinfonia concertante K364 for violin and viola; part of Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet; part of the Tenebrae Responsories by Victoria; Debussy's Gigues (from Images); Britten's arrangement of The Salley Gardens, and Michael Berkeley's own Variations on Greek Folk Songs for solo viola, inspired by Leigh Fermor's own celebrated vocal renditions.

Reconciliation

BBC Radio 3
Texts and music related to reconciliation. Readings by Harriet Walter and Oliver Dimsdale.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b012whsn
In our personal lives or on the world stage, reconciliation is an essential part of humankind's co-existence and civility. It can sometimes be a painful process, admitting our mistakes or failings, but it can also be a moment of celebration where we achieve redemption and forgiveness; where we can put the past behind us and move forward with great hope and optimism. Actors Harriet Walter and Oliver Dimsdale read poetry by John Donne, Peter Porter and Christina Rossetti, with music by Tchaikovsky, John Adams and Nick Cave.

Producer's Note
In our personal lives or on the world stage, reconciliation is an essential part of humankind's co-existence and civility. It can sometimes be a painful process, admitting our mistakes or failings, but it can also be a moment of celebration where we achieve redemption and forgiveness; where we can put the past behind us and move forward with great hope and optimism. Actors Harriet Walter and Oliver Dimsdale read poetry by John Donne, Peter Porter and Christina Rossetti, with music by Tchaikovsky, John Adams and Nick Cave.

Acts of reconciliation have been important moments in many countries’ political histories – for example in South Africa following apartheid; or across Europe in the aftermath of two world wars.

Desmond Tutu wrote that “true reconciliation exposes the awfulness, the abuse, the hurt, the truth. It could even sometimes make things worse. It is a risky undertaking but in the end it is worthwhile, because in the end only an honest confrontation with reality can bring real healing.”

Nkosi Sikelel ‘iAfrica, originally a Methodist hymn and here performed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was used by the resistance movement in South Africa in its campaign against Apartheid. In 1997, and following the fall of the regime, it was taken to form the country’s official National Anthem to illustrate how opposing factions had finally come together.

Siegfried Sassoon and Laurie Lee have both emphasised the need for reconciliation in their war poetry. They suggest war brings death and destruction for both sides and what one should focus on is universal brotherhood. It’s a theme that Beethoven describes in the fourth movement of his 9th Symphony: Menschen werden Bruder – all men will become brothers. Similarly Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A is a great symbol of reconciliation as the key shifts from minor to major.

This edition of the Words and Music begins with the hope that reconciliation can bring. The Landing of the Spirit of ’76 from John Adamsopera Nixon in China symbolises the anxiety and expectation the world felt when President Nixon travelled to meet Chou En-Lai and Mao Tse-Tung in an attempt at bringing two nations together: old enemies could become friends and the politics that hitherto had divided nations might come to an end.

It’s an idea we return to later in the programme with another piece from the opera, News has a kind of mystery, in which Nixon explains his anxiety that ‘the whole world was listening’ to the landmark meeting between two countries.

On a domestic scale, reconciliation can be part of the healing process following the break down of a relationship. In James Fenton’s The Mistake, the author describes the heartbreaking moment when you realise ‘exactly what you did / wrong’. It’s a moment of dismay but that we must ‘Lay claim to’ these mistakes in order to achieve real healing.

Anna Swir’s poem Tomorrow they will carve me, illustrates how moments of distress can similarly bring epiphanies and revelations as it explains how she’s coming to terms with her fate of having to undergo surgery and the risks it poses.
