Jez Nelson presents Archie Shepp and Joachim Kühn at the London Jazz Festival.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b017cj4r
Jez Nelson presents saxophonist Archie Shepp in performance with pianist Joachim Kühn at the London Jazz Festival. Shepp cut his teeth as part of 'The New Thing' in the 1960s, playing extensively with the likes of John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor before going on to explore more traditional African-American traditions and developing one of the most distinctive saxophone sounds of recent decades. Kühn has been part of the European avant-garde for just as long, integrating contemporary classical sounds in work with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and reeds player Michel Portal, more recently earning plaudits for duo work with Ornette Coleman. He and Shepp perform music from their recent critically acclaimed album Wo!man, a collaboration that sees them play together for the first time in many years.

Kirsty Young's castaway is the actor Robert Hardy.

He became a household name as the vet Siegfried Farnon in the hit TV series All Creatures Great and Small and, to a younger generation, he is the Minister of Magic in the Harry Potter films. But the role he is best known for is Winston Churchill - he won a Bafta for his performance in Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years. He believes actors are born rather than made and his own ambitions crystallised when, as a very young boy, he was a page boy at a wedding: "I walked down the aisle with my head held high and as I went, every eye was turned towards me and something inside me said, "That's it, get every eye on you".

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the distinguished foreign correspondent Ann Leslie. She has witnessed and reported on some of the most significant events of the past 30 years including the fall of the Berlin wall; the failed coup against Michael Gorbachev and Nelson Mandela's final walk to freedom. She has reported on uprisings, massacres and wars, collecting numerous awards as she has done so.

She grew up in India and Pakistan and loved India and its culture. When she was around 10 years old she was sent to a boarding school in England. From school she went to Oxford and from there she joined the Daily Express. She was brought to London and was given her own column at the age of twenty-two. But she resigned, saying she wanted to do proper reporting, and it was David English's support for her that saw her start writing foreign news stories and set the course for her distinguished career.

Michael Berkeley's guest is jazz organist, trumpeter and singer Joey DeFrancesco.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b017cgdc
Michael Berkeley's guest today is the American virtuoso jazz organist, trumpeter and singer Joey DeFrancesco, who is in London for the annual Jazz Festival. Born into a family of jazz musicians, Joey began playing the piano aged four before switching to the Hammond organ. By the age of 10 he was playing his own gigs, and at 17 was invited by Miles Davis to join his band, with which he toured Europe. In the 1990s he worked with John McLaughlin's trio, and has partnered many other famous jazz musicians. He has been described as 'one of the most unfussily virtuosic torch-bearers of contemporary organ jazz'.

Today he talks to Michael Berkeley about a range of music, from jazz classics by Jimmy Smith, John Coltrane, Frank Sinatra and Miles Davis, to piano music by Bach, Debussy and Chopin, and a Beethoven symphony.

18:30
BBC Radio 3
Texts and music inspired by the night, with readings by Sian Thomas and William Hope.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00y6ggn
Sian Thomas and William Hope read poetry and prose inspired by the night including work by Neruda, Jackie Kay, Emily Dickinson, John Burnside, Jackie Kay, A.E. Housman and Rachel Carson with music by Mozart, Borodin, Takemitsu, June Tabor and Faure.

Producer: Fiona McLean.

Producer's Note
This week’s Words and Music takes a journey through the night from Emily Dickinson’s ecstatic ‘Wild Nights’ to the hushed imaginary village of Dylan Thomas’ Llareggub. The urban night is heard in Steve Reich’s ‘Electric Counterpoint’, Frank Sinatra’s ‘In the wee small hours of the morning’ and Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted with the Night’ in which the poet walks silently through the empty streets of the city. Outside the city the Scottish poet John Burnside’s poem ‘The Light Trap’ conjures up the moths attracted by the light of a torch whilst Charles Tomlinson describes the ‘tiny stars on darkness’ of fireflies in roses at night. The sensuous and emotional power of the night is heard in Symanowski’s beautiful ‘Symphony no 3 – Song of the Night’, inspired by a poem by Rumi, the great Persian mystic poet and exponent of Sufism. The loneliness of the lover in the darkness is a theme many poets have explored – heard here in Pablo Neruda’s brooding poem on lost love, ‘Tonight I can write’, alongside the sultry heat of Falla’s ‘Nights in the Gardens of Spain’. And the idea that night is the time when thoughts come together and clarity emerges is heard in a passage from Antoine Saint-Exupery’s extraordinary ‘Flight to Arras’, his 1942 memoir recounting his role as a pilot of a reconnaissance plane in France during World War II. The book focuses on one mission where, in the face of death, he thinks of night as the time when his thoughts ‘would be of civilisation, of the destiny of man, of the savour of friendship in my native land’. The programme ends in ‘Under Milk Wood’ with Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto played by Alison Balsom with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Producer: Fiona McLean
