Kirsty Young's castaway is the adventurer Bear Grylls.

His first career was with the SAS, but he was forced to leave after a parachute jump went wrong and he broke his back in three places. As he recuperated, he rekindled his childhood ambition of climbing Mount Everest - he went on to become the youngest Briton to reach its summit. His TV series, Born Survivor, has a global audience of more than a billion people who regularly watch him eating the apparently indigestible and risking his life by pitting himself against nature. Married with three young sons, he says: "The unresolved struggle in my life is the fact that I have a job that has an element of danger to it and at the same time I have a gorgeous family - three young boys that are the pride of my life."

Kirsty Young's castaway is the journalist Jon Snow.

For the past 21 years he's been the face of Channel Four's nightly bulletins where, along with his patent enthusiasm and vigour for dissecting the day's stories, he's noted for his natty line in neckties and socks.

He's a highly experienced foreign correspondent too - he's reported from Haiti, New Orleans, Washington and East Africa among many locations. However it was in El Salvador that he found his name on the list of people who might be targeted by death squads. It was, he says, something of a 'badge of honour'. "I cry on location", he says, "and it's a good thing, because otherwise you bottle it up and come home bonkers."

Michael Berkeley's guest is the journalist John Sergeant, who graduated from Magdalen College Oxford in PPE and joined the BBC as a radio reporter in 1970. He subsequently worked as a war reporter in Vietnam, Israel and Northern Ireland and became a political correspondent in 1981. From 1992 to 2000 he was the BBC's Chief Political Correspondent, before a two-year stint at ITN as Political Editor. He has since appeared on TV shows such as 'Have I Got News for You', 'Countdown', QI, and the 2008 series of 'Strictly Come Dancing', on which he proved very popular with the public, if not with the judges. He has recently filmed documentaries such as John Sergeant's Tourist Trail, and Tracks of Empire, in which he explores the origins of Indian Railways.

His music choices have a distinct political slant. They begin in Vienna with Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which gives rise to a discussion about the rise of European anti-semitism. The tensions present in Vienna were replicated in Berlin, where Lotte Lenya recorded Kurt Weill's Alabama Song in 1930, three years before the Nazi rise to power forced Weill and others out of Germany. John Sergeant's next choice is the theme from the US musical 42nd Street, which demonstrates how Americans reacted to the financial crisis following the 1929 Wall Street crash. Bela Bartok's introverted Sixth Quartet was written on the eve of his own departure for America, where unlike Weill, he felt underrated. Meanwhile, the two greatest 20th-century Russian composers (Prokofiev, represented by his opera War and Peace, and Shostakovich - the 8th Quartet) ended up trying to appease the Soviet authorities. John Sergeant's final choice is an extract from John Adams's opera 'Nixon in China', covering the US President's 1972 visit to China.

Scott Handy and Catherine Harvey read poetry and prose inspired by the Great Exhibition.

This Words and Music is a celebration of The Great Exhibition 1851. The backbone of the programme is made up from descriptions of the rooms by Robert Hunt in his Companion to the Official Catalogue.

Scott Handy and Catherine Harvey read extracts from Robert Hunt together with poetry inspired by the exhibits on show. The display of locomotives in the Central Avenue, for example, leads here to William Carlos Williams' 'Overture to a Dance of Locomotives'. Similarly, China was represented by a model of a joss-house, which is depicted in the programme by Wang Wei's 'Toward the Temple of Heaped Fragrance' and Wordsworth's 'In My Mind's Eye a Temple, like a Cloud'.

The music includes Thomas Morley's 'Hard by a Crystal Fountain', Mosolov's 'Iron Foundry' and Bartok's 'Mikrokosmos'.

Producer Note
160 years ago, Britain was gripped by the excitement of The Great Exhibition, which was to be the blueprint for a series of international exhibitions and fairs intended to showcase manufactured products from far and wide. A huge crystal palace was designed by Joseph Paxton and erected in Hyde Park. Such was its popularity that, between May and October 1851, six million people visited the exhibition, accounting for nearly a third of the British population.

The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations, as it was formally billed, was the collaborative idea of Prince Albert and Henry Cole, who as a result of the exhibition became the first Director of the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum. At face value, the exhibition gave the British industrialists and public an unprecedented opportunity to showcase their products at the same time as admiring the fine craftsmanship of international guests. Prince Albert and Henry Cole, however, also intended the exhibition to encourage British manufacturers to elevate beauty in their own work.

This edition of Words and Music celebrates the Great Exhibition by taking a tour through some of its rooms and reflecting on the exhibits shown. The exhibition was vast and Robert Hunt wrote a Companion to the Official Catalogue, which is a colourful synopsis of the highlights in each room.

Extracts from Hunt’s synopsis provide the backbone of this programme and take us from the entrance hall with its impressive glass fountain, through the rooms containing ponderous locomotive engines and products from Ceylon, then past the Grand Organ in the Gallery West End and an important scientific arrangement in the Central South Gallery, to an exhibition of animals from the Indian Jungle, and finally to exhibits from Turkey and China. Each reading from Hunt’s Companion is set against recordings from different rooms in the Victoria and Albert Museum so as to enhance the impression of walking through the exhibition.

The other texts in the programme are reflections on each of the exhibition rooms visited through Hunt’s Companion. Morley’s Hard by a Crystal Fountain leads into Herrick’s ‘To the Water Nymphs, Drinking at the Fountain’. Then Chopin’s Impromptu in A-flat major, Op.29 No.1 begins like the sparkling spray of a crystal fountain and, in its serene central section, matches Sara Teasdale’s meditative ‘Crystal Gazer’. Similarly, William Carlos Williams’ ‘Overture to a Dance of Locomotives’ is set against Antheil’s driving Ballet pour instruments mecanique et percussion and beautifully conjures up the giant locomotive engines that adorned the Central Avenue of the crystal palace. Turkey, as one of the many countries displaying products at the exhibition, is represented by the gold and silks of Samuel Johnson’s ‘To Miss –‘ set against Bartok’s In Oriental Style from Mikrokosmos Book 2, and Paul Durcan’s dark poem, ‘The Turkish Carpet’ which overlaps with Dowland’s Forlorn Hope Fancy for solo lute.

There are recurrent fanfares throughout the programme - by Benjamin, Bliss, Tippett and Elgar - which are linked to Victorian poems about the Great Exhibition and conjure up the festive excitement of the event.
