The Haunting
Sun 11 Mar 2012
18:30
BBC Radio 3
Texts and music on the theme of haunting, with readings by Emilia Fox and Jamie Glover.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01d0w2r
This week's Words and Music takes the theme of The Haunting, with Emilia Fox and Jamie Glover reading a selection of poetry and prose exploring some of literature's most chilling supernatural hauntings - but also the idea of being haunted by a lover, the past or a place. Berlioz's 'Dies irae' from his 'Symphonie Fantastique' opens the programme - a piece haunted by the composer's vision of female perfection - followed by arguably the most famous haunted character in literary history, Shakespeare's Hamlet, reflecting on the appearance of his father's spirit. Thomas Hardy's 'The Haunter' and D.H Lawrence's 'Silence' capture the melancholy of being haunted by the memory of a loved one, while Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House' and Edgar Allan's Poe's 'The Haunted Palace' provide unsettling examples of haunted house literature. In Thomas Mann's 'Death in Venice', his anti-hero Aschenbach wanders the labyrinthine Venetian streets, haunted by an obsessive sexual impulse; we hear Benjamin Britten's otherworldly musical imagining of the tale. And in Tennyson's poem 'A Spirit Haunts the Year's Last Hours' and Sir Arnold Bax's 'Into the Twilight', we glimpse nature in its haunted state: with the fading autumnal moments of the year, the spectral approach of winter and the growing shadows of the evening.

Producer's Note
‘One need not be a chamber to be haunted’ wrote the poet Emily Dickinson. It is that idea which I have set out to explore in this edition of Words and Music: haunting can mean a visitation from the supernatural but it can also mean the eerie return of a memory or an episode from the past. We begin somewhere in the middle of these definitions with the ‘Dies irae’ from Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique’, a piece which deals with witches’ sabbaths but also with a recurring vision of ideal femininity. Berlioz sought to paint a musical picture of his own romantic infatuation – and that impulse haunts each movement of the piece. Against this menacing musical backdrop we hear perhaps the most famous theatrical response to a ghostly visitation: Hamlet’s avowals of vengeance after his father’s appearance from beyond the grave. In Thomas Hardy’s ‘The Haunter’ and Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ we get a glimpse of the world from the haunter’s perspective – with voices trapped behind an invisible other worldly screen. Debussy’s ‘Syrinx’ provides the ideal counterpoint for ‘The Haunter’’s ethereal presence, hovering unnoticed on the peripheries of the living world. Leontia Flynn’s ‘The Exorcism’ is rooted firmly in the land of the living – with the poet haunted by nothing more ghostly than her past self. An extract from Benjamin Britten’s ‘Death in Venice’ sees the human voice being used to hair-raising effect. Britten’s anti-hero Aschenbach’s sexual obsession with a beautiful young boy has seen him reduced to a wraith-like figure, haunting the labyrinthine streets of Venice in pursuit of his forbidden beloved. We finish with a homage of sorts to the master of hauntings in poetry and prose: Edgar Allen Poe. In Ginsberg’s ‘Haunting Poe’s Baltimore’ we enter the subterranean realm of Poe’s grave, to the ambient strains of Miles Davis. We then finish our journey under the spectral eye of Poe himself, with his poem ‘The Haunted Palace’, where Berlioz again provides the soundtrack for a final twirl around a ghostly ballroom.
