Education
Sun 18 Mar 2012
18:30
BBC Radio 3
Texts and music on the theme of education. Readings by Richard Wilson and Celia Imrie.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01d7b28
This week's Words and Music explores the theme of education. Richard Wilson and Celia Imrie read poetry and prose exploring educational experience, from primary school nature tables and terrifying school mistresses, to the 'cloistral hush' of Oxford University and the darker resonances of learning in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Musical accompaniment includes work by Barber, Schumann and Britten as well as Bartok, Leopold Mozart, Rufus Wainwright and Brahms.

Producers Note
This week’s Words and Music invites you to take a place at the front of the class for an exploration of poetry, prose and music on the theme of An Education. Teachers, students, and the pursuit of knowledge have loomed large in many of the great works of fiction. We hear from Dickens’ implacable school master Mr Gradgrind, whose fact-obsessed diatribe to his pupils makes for a troubling insight into Victorian education. Later in the programme, Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ offers a glimpse of the darker side of the noble pursuit of knowledge. Some of our best loved pieces of music were composed for educational purposes; Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestr’a opens the programme in lively style, later Bartok’s piano music ‘For Children’ may take you back to weekly childhood piano lessons. And in the poem ‘Thanking My Mother for Piano Lesson’s, the poet Diane Wakoski recalls the piano tuition of her youth, and the feelings of joy and security it brought. She recalls tackling pieces by Chopin – and we hear his delicate but joyful Barcarolle underpinning her memories. We move from the pupil’s desk to the other side of the classroom in work which explores the perspective of the teacher. Mr Chips reflects on his first ever struggle to control a class, while a beleaguered school master longs for the bell to ring in D.H Lawrence’s ‘Afternoon in School’. Sir Malcolm Arnold’s film music for ‘The Belles of St Trinians’ offers the perfect mischievous counterpoint to Enid Blyton’s depiction of a French lesson about to go off the rails in Malory Towers. Our journey ends with an arrival; with William Wordsworth recalling his early days at Cambridge University in an extract from ‘The Prelude’. His description of the excitement of seeing the city reveal itself for the first time and the intoxicating sense of freedom as he embarked on life as a young adult, captures perfectly the carefree, youthful joy of student days.
