BBC Radio 4
Musician and comedian Tim Minchin is interviewed by Kirsty Young.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01h2kvd
Kirsty Young's castaway is the composer and performer Tim Minchin.

As a comic and musician he has sold out London's O2 Arena and won legions of fans. He wrote the songs for the Royal Shakespeare Company's musical Matilda - the production of Roald Dahl's children's story has been a smash hit on the West End, won seven Olivier awards and is due to transfer to Broadway next year.

He says: "I'm not a magical thinker - I don't think I need my special undies on or my special pencil - I'm not superstitious about the process. I just took my childhood of reading Dahl and said, 'I know what this is' and wrote some songs."

Paddy Ashdown
Sun 6 May 2012
12:00
BBC Radio 3
Michael Berkeley's guest is politician and diplomat Paddy Ashdown.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01h5z9x
Michael Berkeley welcomes the politician and diplomat Paddy Ashdown, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats. who now sits in the House of Lords as Baron Ashdown. Born in India into a military family, he began his career as a Royal Marine and then as a MI6 intelligence officer. working under cover as a diplomat in Geneva. He joined the Liberal Party in 1975, and won a parliamentary seat in 1983, as the Liberal candidate for Yeovil. Shortly after entering the House of Commons he became SDP-Liberal Alliance spokeman on Trade and Industry, and then for Education. In 1988 he was elected leader of the new Liberal Democratic Party, which he led into two general elections in 1992 and 1997. He stood down in August 1999, was knighted a year later, and became a life peer after retiring from the Commons in 2001. From 2002 to 2006 he was High Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, having been a staunch advocate of international intervention there during the Balkan wars of the 1990s. He testified for the prosecution at the trial of Slobodan Milosevic at the International Criminal Tribunal.

A keen music-lover, Paddy Ashdown discusses his choice of Beethoven's String Quartet Op.127, which he says epitomizes the dignity and nobility of the human spirit; Elgar's Sea Pictures, which he found inspiring when on active service; one of Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs, which moves him to tears; an extract from Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, which he thinks the greatest piece of music ever written; a Northern Irish folk song, which reminds him of his Irish upbringing; an extract from Act II of Puccini's Tosca, which he says is an anthem for liberation, and a poignant Balkan folksong, which is in the bloodstream of his life.

May Day
Sun 6 May 2012
18:30
BBC Radio 3
Words and music on the theme of May Day. Readers: Sarah Alexander and Julian Rhind-Tutt.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00s6sdg
May Day is often associated with English pastoral images: Maypoles, morris dancing and the gathering of greenery. But there's a darker side too, as May Day has throughout history had an undercurrent of misrule, evil practices and sexual liberty. Sarah Alexander and Julian Rhind-Tutt perform poems and prose on the theme by Milton, Chaucer, Herrick and Richmal Crompton, with music including Britten, Debussy, Michael Berkeley, and The Rolling Stones.

Producer - Ellie Mant.

Producer Note
May Day is often associated with English pastoral images: Maypoles, morris dancing and the gathering of greenery. But there's a darker side too, as May Day has throughout history had an undercurrent of misrule, evil practices and sexual liberty. The programme begins in a pastoral vein with poetry and prose about May Day celebrations through the ages, including tudor May Games, and traditional music such as the Padstow May Song. Then comes the sexual liberty associated with the celebrations; Philip Stubbes complains about sexual practices in his Anatomie of Abuses, written in the 16th century, and Britten takes a comic view of the subsequent difficulties in finding a suitable May Queen in his opera Albert Herring. Meanwhile, there’s more disruption as Richmal Crompton’s William ruins the May Day celebrations in his inimitable way by declaring himself May King, and appointing his own Queen. The latter half of the programme depicts the violent riots that have traditionally occurred on May Day, from 'Evil May Day' in 1517, to the Haymarket Riots in Chicago in 1886, right up to the present day socialist riots. And the programme ends with a famous depiction of a May Day sacrifice, from the film The Wicker Man.
