The Bad Plus

Cult US trio The Bad Plus perform at the 2014 EFG London Jazz Festival.

Throughout their career The Bad Plus have traversed ground from Stravinsky to David Bowie, Queen to jazz standards - but whether joyously reimagining pop classics or outing their own compositions, the band's iconoclastic sound has always remained a product of its three distinct players: pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King. For many fans their famed cover versions acted as the gateway, but here performing to a sold-out room at East London's cavernous Village Underground club, The Bad Plus focus almost entirely on originals from their latest album Inevitable Western. Be it twisting rhythmic workouts, anthemic piano hammering or freewheeling improvisation, it's a performance delivered with a telepathic conviction born of many years on stage together.

Geoffrey Smith's Jazz
Geoffrey Smith's Jazz does exactly what it says on the tin: a weekly programme in which Geoffrey Smith shares his love of jazz, through an exploration of its great writers, singers and players, as told from his own individual perspective.

Each programme take us through his personally-selected playlist of tracks. It's loosely-themed; maybe a great artist, a jazz style or something more off-the-wall. But that serves as just the start of a fascinating journey to the heart of the music Geoffrey is so passionate about.

If you want to know how to wield a Spartan spear, or whether Athens really was the cradle of democracy - or indeed what ancient Greek music might have sounded like, Paul Cartledge is the man to go to.

He has probably done more than anyone else in the past three decades to advance knowledge of ancient Greek culture - both in academic circles and in the public arena. He was until very recently the first A G Leventis Professor of Greek Culture at Cambridge, a chair founded to study a thousand years of Greek cultural achievements and to highlight their lasting influence on society today.

Paul talks to Michael Berkeley about why ancient history is relevant to us today; why the myths of the classical world have been such an enduring inspiration for composers; why democracy would work better without political parties; and the pitfalls of being a historical advisor to Hollywood.

And Paul shares with Michael his passion for music that stretches back to his childhood, including Brahms, Bach, Rossini, Stravinsky - and Bob Dylan.

Mezzogiorno

BBC Radio 3

Mezzogiorno is the land of lemon trees as well as the Mafia; it's the land of poverty and of plenty; of Giuseppe di Lampedusa as well as Leoncavallo. For centuries, Europe's beautiful south has held the Western imagination captive; so join Alexandra Gilbreath and John Rowe as they explore a region where Aeneas rubs shoulders with the Vespa.

Producer's Note

A land of lemon trees, blue sea and and pulverising sunshine but also a land of ruined civilisations, sickness, and the Mafia. If you were making a map of the Mezzogiorno you would probably include Calabria, Campania, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Puglia, Molise and Sicily – but something would still be missing. Mezzogiorno is more than a matter of geography – it’s a question of history and sensibility. It’s a kind of Camelot where the past lies buried in the present; where sharp sensuality is matched by a vivid sense of mortality; and where the pagan meets the Catholic…. its boundaries following the traditional fault line between the rich North and the poor South in Italy.

This week’s edition of Words and Music is devoted to an exploration of the Mezzogiorno with the help of some of Italy’s most brilliant writers and musicians and with some who, although not born there, have fallen under its spell. The cast includes Leonardo Sciascia, Elio Vittorini, Giuseppe di Lampedusa, Carlo Levi and W H Auden as well as Bellini, Leoncavallo, Alessandro Scarlatti and Gesualdo, so book yourself an early summer holiday and take off for the beautiful, multi-faceted South with the actors, John Rowe and Alexandra Gilbreath.
