Jez Nelson with new music from the Leeds jazz scene: Home of the Brave and Chris Sharkey.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b02x94d2
Jez Nelson presents new music from the Leeds jazz scene with acoustic quartet Home Of The Brave's unique take on the music of American Westerns and a solo set from guitarist Chris Sharkey.

Freewheeling jazz from a four-piece inspired by the music of American Westerns and distorted solo improvisations on rock-pop classics – the two collide inside the tiny top room of a city-centre pub at one of Fusebox's monthly nights in Leeds. Continuing Jazz on 3's celebration of contemporary jazz from around the UK, the double bill of Home Of The Brave and Chris Sharkey demonstrates why the Yorkshire city continues to uphold such a strong reputation for accomplished alternative music.

Headlining the night at the Fox & Newt, Home Of The Brave is the brainchild of Jazz Yorkshire's Musician of the Year in 2012, Richard Ormrod. The multi-reedsman has developed a love for the themes and harmonies of Western soundtracks by composers such as Bernstein and Morricone and with Paul Hession (drums), Jonny Flockton (guitar) and Rus Pearson (double bass) he brings something from those cinematic moods into this new experimental setting.

Over the last two decades the city of Leeds has become home to one of the country's liveliest indie and alternative rock scenes and guitarist Chris Sharkey represents a key point of intersection with the worlds of jazz and improvised music. Here heard apart from the members of improvising math-jazz outfits Collider and Trio VD of which he is a member, Sharkey's solo set nevertheless packs a powerful punch amidst the more meditative moments.

Poet Paul Muldoon introduces his personal musical choices.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b02yjjwn
As part of British music season on Radio 3, poets from across the country talk about their musical passions with Michael Berkeley.

Paul Muldoon, born and raised in Northern Ireland, is one of our most distinguished poets, having won the Pulitzer, TS Eliot and Irish Times Prizes. In this programme he celebrates his Northern Irish roots in music and poetry, and discusses his fascination with the place where popular and serious music meet.

For five years he was professor of poetry at Oxford, and he now teaches at Princeton University in the USA, where he is writing libretti and goes to as many rock gigs as possible.

Paul's choices include Lou Reed singing Kurt Weill, music from Stravinsky, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy, and a Metallica song played on four cellos.

Temptation
Sun 23 Jun 2013
18:30
BBC Radio 3
Texts and music on the theme of temptation. Readings by Emma Fielding and Tom Goodman-Hill
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b02yjkbv
Emma Fielding and Tom Goodman-Hill read poetry and prose on the theme of Temptation including Marlowe, Christina Rossetti, Yeats, Tony Harrison and Margaret Atwood, with music by Gounod, Penderecki, William Bolcom, Humperdinck and Stravinsky.

Producer's Note

As Oscar Wilde said ‘The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it’ and this edition of Words and Music features an array of characters who did exactly that. Most of them came to a sticky end eventually, but they had a good deal of fun on the way and as I compiled the programme I couldn’t help feeling the poets and composers had greatly enjoyed the process of depicting the particulars of each temptation – goblin fruits, shiny red shoes, juicy plums, beautiful women, magical powers, knowledge and gold.

We start in the Garden of Eden where poor Eve is no match for a charming and seductive Satan, dramatized by Tony Harrison, who drew on the York and Wakefield Mystery Cycles. The music is taken from John Metacalf’s rhapsody Paradise Haunts and was inspired partly by Derek Jarman’s garden on the Kent coast and partly by Metcalf’s own wild garden in West Wales.

During the programme you will also hear music from William Bolcom’s piano suite telling the story of The Fall in ragtime, Penderecki’s opera Paradise Lost, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat, based on a Russian folk tale about a soldier’s encounter with the devil who persuades him to sell his violin in return for unlimited wealth. It proves to be a bad idea.

Perhaps the most famous victim of temptation is Faust and I have included several extracts from Christopher Marlowe’s famous play Doctor Faustus. It was published in 1592 and between 1594 and 1597 it was performed twenty five times. At the time the play was highly controversial because of Marlowe’s alleged atheism and the play’s diabolical theme. Contemporary audiences thrilled to the fear that Faustus’s onstage spells might call up real demons. When I recorded Tom Goodman-Hill’s spine tingling rendition of the incantation I admit I couldn’t help feeling Mephistopheles might appear in a puff of smoke in the studio. But I lived to tell the tale and I hope you enjoy the results.
