BBC Radio 3
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b062hpby
Muslim theologian Mona Siddiqui talks to Michael Berkeley about her passion for piano music, how she came to love classical music through the cinema, and the sometimes controversial role of music in Islam.

Mona Siddiqui was born in Karachi, but she moved to Britain with her family at the age of four and was brought up in Huddersfield. She's now Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at Edinburgh University. She's a distinguished scholar, but above all she's a communicator, with a regular slot on Thought for the Day. Her latest book, My Way: A Muslim Woman's Journey, is a moving account of how her faith has shaped her life.

She's a leading voice for moderate Islam, unafraid to address the complex and controversial issues facing the Muslim community.
Her choices include piano music by Liszt and Tchaikovsky, an aria from Madame Butterfly, music from Schindler's List, and a ghazal song from Pakistan sung by Mehdi Hassan.

In the South
Sun 5 Jul 2015
18:15
BBC Radio 3
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b062hps5
In the South: Anne-Marie Duff and Malcolm Sinclair head off across the Channel to explore the words, music and sounds of southern Europe, in the company of Alphonse Daudet, Hilaire Belloc, Paul Valéry and Marcel Pagnol. With music by Berlioz, Canteloube, Rodrigo, Ennio Morricone, Michel Fugain and Italian folk band Sonidumbra.

Producer's Note
Le Midi, il Mezzogiorno, el Sur…. The South is many things to many people. But this programme takes its inspiration from summers spent in the heady, lavender- and thyme-scented hillsides of Provence or central Italy, or in the bare plains around Toledo…
It’s of course personal, and this south won’t be everyone else’s, but here are classic texts of the British traveller abroad, like Hilaire Belloc’s wonderful Path to Rome which opens the programme, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s wry and witty Travels with a Donkey. France’s Midi offers us the dark, threatening words of Guy de Maupassant’s Corsica-set A Vendetta, the joyous diary of Alphonse Daudet from his Provencal windmill and the delightful rustic bouncy narrative of Marcel Pagnol’s Jean de Florette. In lyrical mood, Tennyson evokes a heat-filled Summer Night, DH Lawrence’s Giorno dei Morti paints a sombre Italian procession, Paul Valéry’s celebrated Le Cimetière Marin finds the perfect English form in a version by Cecil Day-Lewis and Elaine Feinstein contributes a touching memory of a holiday with her aged father, Rosemary in Provence.
Music is by Berlioz, Bizet, Falla, Rodrigo, Canteloube, Tarrega and Albeniz, and in popular vein, classic songs by Michel Sardou, Michel Fugain and Nino Ferrer. Also featured is the debut collection of Umbrian folksongs by the brilliant Italian ensemble Sonidumbra and the sensational voice of Barbara Bucci – joyful and plangent music that spans the Renaissance and today’s folk traditions.
